This is the first of the 60 Holmes stories which Doyle wrote. It was purchased by Ward, Lock & Co. in October 1886 for £ 25 and appeared one year later in Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887.

When they first met, Watson told Holmes, "I keep a bull pup." The pup is not mentioned again throughout the entire canon.

"I consider that a man's brain originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to stock it with such furniture as you choose."

"From a drop of water," said the writer, "a logician could infer the possibility of an Atlantic or a Niagara..."

Although Holmes disparaged Poe's Dupin, he used all Dupin's ruses in the course of the canon. Same with Lecoq.

By glancing at a man from the window Holmes deduces he is a retired sergeant of the marines.

"It is a capital mistake to theorize before you have all the evidence. It biases the judgment."

Drebber had a copy of the Decameron in his pocket.

I have made a special study of cigar ashes -- in fact, I have written a monograph upon the subject."

Holmes went to Halle's to hear Norman Neruda.

"When a fact appears to be opposed to a long train of deductions, it invariably proves to be capable of bearing some other interpretation."

Holmes criticizes the unscientific way in which Watson has written up "A Study in Scarlet."

Holmes deduces the personality of Watson's brother by examining his watch.

In this story, Watson was wounded in the leg by the Jezail bullet.

During a long closed carriage ride, Holmes follows their journey and knows exactly what street they are on.

"when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."

Holmes deduces that a book-cipher must refer to an almanac.

"The famous scientific criminal, as famous among crooks as -- "
"My blushes, Watson!" Holmes murmured in a deprecating voice.
"I was about to say, as he is unknown to the public."

Moriarty's brother is a station master in London.

Holmes has MacDonald send a letter to Mrs. Douglas saying that he plans to drain the moat in order to get Barker to expose his motives.

Doyle freely admitted that he based the Scowrers on Alan J. Pinkerton's book, The Molly Maguires and the Detectives.

Holmes describes Mortimer from examining his walking stick.

Mortimer refers to Holmes as "the second highest expert in Europe," the highest being Mousier Bertillion -- but he is not "a practical man" like Holmes.

Holmes has written a monograph on the dating of manuscripts.

Stapleton steals one of Henry's boots to give the hound something which smells of him, but it is new and not imbued with his scent so he takes it back and steals an old one.

"The world is full of obvious things which nobody by any chance ever observes."

Holmes can identify 75 fragrances of perfume.

Holmes immediately notes the striking resemblance of Stapleton to Sir Hugo's portrait.

Watson plays a much larger role in the story than he usually does -- almost as large as the master's. This story is considered by many critics and aficionados to be the best in the canon.

Doyle dedicated the tale to his friend and golfing companion, Fletcher Robinson whose coachman, Harry M. Baskerville provided the name for the story.
