我列列出了1841－1949年间大部分西方著名的侦探的初次登场案件以供大家参考。需要指出的是这不一定是侦探的第一个案件。

1920 H・C・贝利 侦探：福琼先生
初登场案：《呼叫福琼先生》 手头的资料还说第一个短篇是《大公的茶叶》不知是否就是这篇。贝利在一战到二战期间和赛耶斯、克里斯蒂、傅里曼、克劳夫兹并称英国侦探小说五大家。

1923菲利普・麦克唐纳 侦探：格思林上校
初登场案：《锉子》 此人好像大家都不太熟悉，据说是大部头著作作者，拥有不少推理迷。下面给出《锉子》的简介： 财政部长约翰・福德在自己家里的书房里被谋杀。凶器是一把大木锉。根据锉上的指纹和其他种种情况分析，警方逮捕了他的秘书。前来调查此案的格思林上校虽然认为是内部作案，但坚信秘书是无罪的。他了解到，案件发生的那天晚上，住在附近的一位寡妇曾到过现场的窗外。她与案件本身并无直接关系，但由这条线索入手，上校逐渐接近了案情的真相。文中还穿插了上校对那个寡妇的恋情等三对男女的恋爱情节，为作品增添了色彩。
